brakes

1965 was the first year that Corvette was offered with disk brakes in all four corners no less. The basic design is pretty stout, big cast iron 4-piston calipers with 11" rotors. Plenty of braking power from the factory. There are few flaws to the design, like the fact that the piston sleeves are prone to corrosion and they are awfully heavy. I have rebuild the stock calipers with stainless steel sleeves and all new pistons.

Other thing I did to further improve the brakes was the electric brake booster/Master cylinder from ABS Power Brakes. I have used the hydroboost in the 1979 Corvette and it offers tremendous braking power, yet the fact that Hydroboost uses the power steering pump to power itself and the same fluid is circulated in the system. I've given the C3-R a lot of spanking and couple of times after some hard driving the power steering fluid has over heated and this has caused the steering to go bad as well as the brakes. This is why I wanted to give the electric set up a go. Learn more about it on the ABSPB website. So far I have been very pleased with the system, the pedal feel is better that with the hydroboost and it provides more power too.
